Healthy Soils and Pastures Workshop

Over thirty people attended a Healthy Soils and Pastures workshop held at West Wyalong on May 15 2017.

The event was organised by CWFS to encourage better knowledge of strategies to combat weeds in a farming system, reduce the reliance on agrochemicals and be more pro-active in monitoring and manipulating soil pH.

Presenters included:

Hanwen Wu (NSW DPI) who spoke on weed resistance and how to prevent it and providing weed competition.

John Piltz (NSW DPI) spoke on forage conservation techniques, the use of fodder crops to assist in weed control and grazing techniques to reduce weed seed set.

Belinda Hackney (Central West LLS) talked about healthier soils and increased productivity by monitoring soil pH and the application of lime if necessary.

Megan Rogers (Sheep Connect) touched on the relationship between healthy pastures and reduced lamb mortality, as well as overall livestock productivity increases.

Sarah Curry of Major’s Mulch hosted the event and later in the day spoke on mulching and general soil health.

A huge thanks to the speakers, those that attended the event, Sarah Curry for hosting and the sponsors that made it all possible.
